Onyx FR-A is a flame-retardant variant of Onyx designed for use in aerospace applications where parts must be non-flammable. It has a “UL Blue Card” certification and is considered V-0 rated. In addition, FR-A material establishes lot-level material traceability and passes the test suite necessary for qualification for 3D printable parts in the aerospace industry. It can be reinforced with any continuous fiber and is compatible with the Markforged Industrial series. Some key applications include weld fixtures, aerospace clips & brackets, laser marking fixtures and energy/electrical brackets and fixtures.

ULTEMTM 9085 filament is Markforged’s high temperature printing polymer developed by SABIC. It’s an extremely durable thermoplastic that exhibits excellent flame, smoke, andtoxicity (FST) characteristics. Usable in aerospace applications, ULTEMTM filament is available in Markforged’s CFR. Compatible only with Markforged’s FX20, this ultra high-performance polyetherimide (PEI) thermoplastic, can be reinforced with specific continuous carbon fiber. Some of the critical applications ULTEMTM is used for include high temperature tooling, aircraft interior panelling, aircraft brackets, handles and knobs, custom ducting and composite moulds and layup tools.

In conclusion, ULTEMTM and Onyx FR-A are both remarkable materials, each with its unique strengths and applications. ULTEMTM, with its exceptional heat resistance and mechanical properties, is an ideal choice for demanding aerospace and automotive applications where high-temperature stability and strength are paramount. Onthe other hand, Onyx FR-A offers flame-retardant properties, making it a valuable option in scenarios where fire safety is a critical concern. The choice between these materials ultimately depends on the specific requirements of the engineering application at hand. Markforged's diverse material offerings empower engineers to select the perfect solution for their distinct needs, ensuring top-notch performance in their 3D printing projects.
